Technology Overview

The ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 135-2012 governs the BACnet® protocol - a Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks. Basic understanding of the BACnet network can be helpful to explain how the Bosch IoT Gateway BACnet adapter operates.

The BACnet protocol adapter helps provide local connectivity for BACnet devices via the gateway. These devices need to be in an established network and connected to the router or a gateway. The adapter then is designed to create the BACnet client. That local device helps communicate to the other devices - things like the discovery of devices etc. and is considered a BACnet device itself.

What is the BACnet client

In order for a foreign device to fully participate in the activities of a BACnet/IP network, the device must register itself with a BBMD (BACnet Broadcast Management Device) serving one of the IP subnets comprising that network. "Full participation" implies the ability to send and receive both directed and broadcast messages. А BАCnet device (client) can contain a number of services - such as the WHOIS and IAM services. Any BACnet device on the network can notify the other participants via such IAM message who can accept it. In this case our local device receives this message. Alternatively, the local device can send a WHOIS broadcast request to devices who can receive it and respond.
