The Device Access enables the user to create his own Device Item based on the Device Item provided by the protocol adapter and to map their properties and operations. The main idea of the mapping mechanism is that the user is able to define his own Device Item with no need to change the Device Item that is provided by the protocol adapter. The Device Item created by the user is called Target Device Item and the Device Item provided from the protocol adapter is called Source Device Item. The possible mappings are between:

• property to property – when the Source Device Item property is changed, then the Target Device Item property is changed too. The opposite statement is also true – when the Target Device Item property is changed, then the Source Device Item property is changed too.
• property to operation – when the Target Device Item property is changed, then the Source Device Item operation is invoked.
• operation to property – when the Target Device Item operation is invoked, then the Source Device Item property is changed.
• operation to operation – when the Target Device Item operation is invoked, then the Source Device Item operation is invoked.
